Isabela & Cagayan Valley

Mild to medium and gently sweet - dry wood, toasted rice, light molasses and a faint floral note, with very little pepper and no mineral bite. The finish is short and clean. It burns fast, leaving a light grey ash, and the traditional Manila style leans on that quickness rather than fighting it. Poorly fermented lots can show a distinct sourness, which is the most common flaw in the category.

Priming discipline varies widely between smallholders and the larger estates. Middle leaf gives the most consistent wrapper and binder; upper leaf is modest in strength by Central American standards.

Alluvial sandy loam deposited by the Cagayan River across the broad valley of northern Luzon, fertile and free-draining. It grows a broad, soft leaf with modest nicotine.

Monsoon tropical with a wet season from May to October and a dry season from November to April, when the crop is grown. The valley is exposed to typhoons, and a bad storm year can wipe out a harvest outright.

The Spanish crown ran a tobacco monopoly from 1782 to 1882 that designated the Cagayan Valley and Ilocos as compulsory growing zones and made Manila cigars a global commodity. Tabacalera, founded in 1881, is among the oldest continuously operating cigar makers in Asia.

Small and stable for premium cigars, with the overwhelming majority of Philippine tobacco acreage now going to cigarette leaf rather than cigar leaf.
