Vega

/ VEH-ga /
Growing & TerroirSpanish
Definition
A tobacco field or plantation, especially in Cuba, where the word carries the sense of a specific named plot with its own reputation. Vegas are identified by soil type, drainage, and the family that works them.
Why it matters
Buyers of Cuban leaf trade on vega names much as wine buyers trade on vineyards, and factories pay premiums for leaf from particular plots.
In context
"The best wrapper on the truck came from a single vega in San Juan y Martinez."
