La Aroma de Cuba

A revived pre-revolutionary Cuban name, owned by Ashton Distributors and blended and made by the Garcia family in Esteli.

La Aroma de Cuba was a Havana brand in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, one of many names that lapsed or was expropriated after 1959. Ashton Distributors acquired the trademark for the non-Cuban market and relaunched it in the early 2000s, initially with production in Honduras, before moving the brand to the Garcia family in Nicaragua. The name is one of dozens of Cuban trademarks registered separately outside the island after 1959.

Under that arrangement La Aroma de Cuba has become one of the better-known Nicaraguan-made lines in American shops. Mi Amor, built on a Mexican San Andres wrapper, is the most widely sold blend; Edicion Especial, Noblesse and Reserva fill out a range that sits in the medium-to-full band and is made at My Father Cigars in Esteli. The brand sits alongside San Cristobal in the Ashton portfolio, both made by the same factory.

The brand is a clear case of a name outliving its origin: nothing about the modern cigar is Cuban except the trademark and the packaging vocabulary. Because published accounts differ on the exact relaunch year and on when production moved to Nicaragua, this record is marked reported. Trademarks of this kind are common in the industry, and a shopper cannot infer origin from a Spanish name on a band.
