Cuban Denomination of Origin
Growing & TerroirEnglish
Definition
The protected designation system that reserves terms such as Habano and Vuelta Abajo for tobacco grown and cigars made in defined Cuban zones under specified methods. Habanos S.A. administers the marks, which are recognized in most markets outside the United States.
Why it matters
It is why non-Cuban makers must say Habano seed rather than Habano, and why the word on a box carries a legal claim rather than a stylistic one.
In context
"The denomination of origin covers not just where the leaf grew but how the cigar was rolled."
