Ring Gauge

AnatomyEnglish
Definition
Diameter of a cigar measured in 64ths of an inch, so a 50 ring gauge is 50/64 of an inch, just under 20 mm. Cuban catalogues list diameter in millimetres and convert to ring gauge for export markets.
Why it matters
Ring gauge changes the ratio of wrapper to filler and how much heat the coal produces, so one blend smokes noticeably differently at 42 and at 60.
In context
"Same blend, but at 60 ring gauge the wrapper barely registers."
