Cibao Valley

Smooth, bready and gently sweet - fresh cream, blanched almond, light cedar and a soft toasted-grain note. It has less mineral edge and less pepper than Nicaraguan leaf and considerably less mid-palate grip, which is precisely why it underpins so many mild-to-medium blends. Combustion is excellent and forgiving. Piloto Cubano brings more spine and a peppery finish; Olor is softer, more aromatic and burns faster.

Because the leaf is naturally mild, blenders lean on upper primings more heavily here than they would in Nicaragua. Dominican ligero is real but restrained, and it is generally used for body rather than for heat.

Deep alluvial loam laid down between the Cordillera Septentrional and the Cordillera Central, fertile and moisture-retentive with high organic content. It grows a broad, soft leaf that ferments quickly and cleanly.

Warm and reliably humid with rainfall spread through the year, shielded from the worst Atlantic weather by the northern range. There is no hard dry season, which makes curing management more important than elsewhere.

Tobacco has grown in the Cibao since the sixteenth century, but the modern industry dates to the 1960s and 1970s, when the Cuban embargo pushed manufacturers and Cuban seed stock to Santiago. The Dominican Republic became the largest exporter of premium handmade cigars to the United States and has stayed there.

Stable and mature, with a well-established grower base and consistent volume.
