La Canela

A rosado-to-Colorado shade wrapper with a fine grain, tight veins and a light natural oil. It reads sweet and warmly spiced - cinnamon, toasted sugar, dried apricot and a soft cedar backbone - with a noticeably sweet impression on the lips. It burns evenly and slowly for a shade leaf. Its role is aromatic: it perfumes a strong Dominican filler rather than adding weight to it.

Wrapper grading here is about leaf size, color uniformity and freedom from blemish rather than strength, and the middle primings supply the bulk of usable leaf. Yields of top-grade wrapper are low, which is why output stays limited.

Rich alluvial loam southwest of Santiago, selected specifically for wrapper cultivation rather than inherited from an existing tobacco district. Careful soil management and shade are what make the site work.

Warm and humid with a long growing season; the crop is grown under cheesecloth to diffuse light, hold humidity and keep the leaf thin and elastic.

Carlos Fuente Jr. planted the site in the early 1990s to disprove the received wisdom that the Dominican Republic could not grow a fine wrapper. The first OpusX cigars reached the market in 1995 and settled the argument.

Stable but deliberately small - output is tightly controlled and reserved almost entirely for a single family's brands.
