Fuente Fuente OpusX
Released in 1995, the first premium cigar built on Dominican-grown wrapper, proving that shade-quality wrapper leaf could be produced outside Cuba and Ecuador.
Carlos Fuente Jr. released Fuente Fuente OpusX in November 1995. Its point was agricultural rather than commercial: the cigar used a Cuban-seed wrapper grown on the family's own Dominican land at a time when the accepted view was that the Dominican Republic could not produce wrapper of that quality. Fuente Jr. had planted thirty-seven acres of Cuban seed at the farm that became Chateau de la Fuente in the early 1990s to test that assumption.
The blend is an all-Dominican puro, rolled in a dedicated area of the Fuente factory in Santiago and aged in closed cabinets for at least a year before release. Demand at launch outstripped supply by a wide margin; early distribution was limited to the eastern United States and retailers rationed sales. The band, printed in the Netherlands, became one of the most imitated designs in the industry.
Fuente does not sell Chateau de la Fuente leaf to other manufacturers. The programme has since expanded into Lost City, Angel's Share and Rare Black editions, along with the Forbidden X and 20 Years Celebration series, but total output remains constrained by the acreage the family farms. Counterfeits have been a persistent problem since launch, and the company has repeatedly changed band and box details in response. The farm also supplies wrapper for a small number of other Fuente releases.

A Churchill-format OpusX vitola introduced in 2007 that took Cigar of the Year honors sixteen years later, in 2023. Grown entirely at Chateau de la Fuente in Bonao, Dominican Republic - one of very few farms outside Cuba ever to successfully grow Cuban-seed wrapper leaf, planted by Carlos 'Carlito' Fuente Jr. starting in 1991 on land previously thought unsuitable for wrapper. OpusX remains tightly allocated; MSRP shown reflects the original launch price rather than current secondary-market pricing.
