La Flor Dominicana

Litto Gomez, a jeweller by trade, and his wife Ines Lorenzo-Gomez entered the cigar business in the mid-1990s with a brand first called Los Libertadores, renamed La Flor Dominicana after the flower of the tobacco plant. The company grew out of a small Santiago operation into a factory in Tamboril, and in 2006 Gomez bought farmland to grow his own filler and wrapper, most visibly at the La Canela property.

The house style is deliberately strong. The Ligero and Double Ligero lines are built on high proportions of top-priming leaf, and the Andalusian Bull, Salomon and Small Batch releases have extended that reputation. The Chisel, a format with a flattened, blade-like head, is the brand's most distinctive piece of construction and has been widely imitated. That decision put the company among the small group of Dominican makers controlling their own leaf.

La Flor Dominicana remains family-owned and is one of the few Dominican houses growing a meaningful share of its own tobacco rather than buying it. Published sources give both 1994 and 1996 as the founding year, depending on whether the Los Libertadores launch or the renaming is counted; the earlier date is used here and the record marked reported. The company also maintains a retail presence in the Dominican Republic.
