Chateau de la Fuente

Chateau de la Fuente is a farm rather than a factory, but it functions as a production asset as central as any rolling floor. In the early 1990s Carlos Fuente Jr. planted Cuban-seed tobacco on land the family had acquired, aiming to disprove the industry consensus that the Dominican Republic could not grow wrapper of premium quality. Roughly thirty-seven acres were put down under shade and sun-grown regimes.

The wrapper that resulted became the defining component of Fuente Fuente OpusX, released in 1995, and the farm has supplied the line ever since. The family does not sell leaf from the property to other manufacturers, and surplus is destroyed rather than traded, which is unusual in an industry where wrapper is routinely bought and sold between houses. Shade cloth and sun-grown plots are both used on the property.

The site also carries the Fuente family's charitable work and a cigar-country visitor programme. Because published accounts differ on when the land was acquired and when planting began, the date here is recorded as reported. As a record it belongs in a reference work on manufacturing because it shows that wrapper quality is a function of agronomy and selection rather than of national origin alone, a point the industry had treated as settled before 1995.
