Tapado

Shade growing, from the Spanish for covered. Fields are tented with cheesecloth on posts and wire, which diffuses light, raises humidity, and holds heat, producing thinner, larger, more elastic leaves with finer veins.

Nearly all premium wrapper other than broadleaf and naturally shaded Ecuadorian leaf is grown tapado, and the cloth adds substantial cost per hectare.
