Jalapa

Distinctly sweeter and more aromatic than Esteli: cedar, dried fruit, honey, a floral top note and a gentle white-pepper prickle rather than a cayenne sting. The finish is clean and slightly sugary on the lips. Because the leaf is thinner it burns readily and takes fire well, making it a reliable wrapper. Blenders reach for Jalapa when a Nicaraguan blend needs lift and perfume rather than more weight.

Middle primings are the prize here and supply most of the region's wrapper and viso. Jalapa ligero exists but is noticeably softer than Esteli ligero, so it adds sweetness and length more than raw power.

Lighter reddish sandy loam with more iron oxide and less black volcanic ash than Esteli. The lower nitrogen load yields a thinner, finer-grained leaf that is far better suited to wrapper work.

A bowl-shaped valley ringed by mountains near the Honduran border, cooler and moister than Esteli, with morning fog that lingers and softens the light.

Jalapa was planted seriously in the same post-embargo push that built Esteli, but its reputation took longer to form because early buyers wanted strength above all. Its stock rose as the market matured and blenders began looking for balance.

Expanding, with new acreage going in and growing demand for its wrapper and viso grades.
