Growing & TerroirSpanish
Definition
The Ecuadorian coastal province and town at the center of that country's wrapper industry. Persistent cloud cover off the Pacific filters sunlight for much of the growing season, giving shade-like conditions without cloth.
Why it matters
This natural shading, plus rich alluvial soil, is why Ecuador supplies a large share of the world's premium wrapper at a lower cost than tented farms.
In context
"Quevedo grows Connecticut and Habano seed side by side under the same natural cloud cover."
