It covers the cities, factories, families, tobacco regions, techniques and vocabulary that built the premium cigar, and it is organised so that every record connects to every other one. A term in the dictionary links to the regions where that leaf grows, the factories that use it, and the people who made it matter.

Why "capitol" - why cities?

Because every cigar has a capitol. Havana is the reference point, but the story runs through Tampa and Key West, through Miami and Estelí and Santiago and Danlí, through Seville where the cigar was first industrialised and Manila where a colonial monopoly ran for a century. Organising by place is what makes the history legible: migration, labour, terroir and family all resolve at the level of a city.

How is the information verified?

Accepted Answer

Every record carries a confidence level - verified, reported or estimated - and the archive deliberately shows its uncertainty rather than hiding it. Where sources conflict on a founding year or a factory count, the entry says so. Where a manufacturer has not disclosed a blend component, it is marked undisclosed rather than guessed. A reference work earns trust by being honest about what it does not know.

Is this a Cuban site or a New World site?

Both, without preference. Where a trademark is split between Cuba and the New World - Cohiba, Montecristo, Partagás, Romeo y Julieta, H. Upmann, Punch, Hoyo de Monterrey - the archive keeps separate records and states plainly who controls which and where each is made. Confusing the two is the single most common error in cigar writing.

Where does the news come from?

The Journal aggregates live RSS from independent cigar publications - halfwheel, Cigar Journal, Cigar Coop, Blind Man's Puff, Cigar Dojo, Cigar Snob, Developing Palates and The Cigar Authority. Headlines and excerpts belong to those publishers and every card links back to the original. Cigar Capitol does not republish their work.

Can I contribute a correction?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and corrections are the most valuable thing a reader can send. Factory attributions, family names, dates, regional spellings and first-hand recollections from people who worked in the trade are exactly what a public archive needs. Contributions are labelled as community knowledge and held separately from verified reference material.

What is the Tobacco Atlas for?

Accepted Answer

It answers the question most cigar writing skips: what does this leaf actually taste like, and why. Each region entry covers soil, elevation, climate, seed varieties, which components it produces, how its primings behave and which blends rely on it. Read the Estelí and Jalapa entries side by side and the difference between power and aromatics stops being marketing language.

Does Cigar Capitol sell cigars?

Accepted Answer

No. It is a reference and media publication, not a retailer, and it holds no inventory. That independence is the point - an archive that sells the objects it catalogues cannot be trusted to describe them neutrally.
