Suckering (Desahijado)

Removing the axillary shoots, called hijos or suckers, that a topped plant pushes out at every leaf joint. It is done by hand every few days, sometimes assisted by chemical growth inhibitors.

Skipped suckering wastes the gains from topping, since the shoots draw off exactly the energy meant for the leaves.
