Transplanting

Growing & TerroirEnglish
Definition
Moving seedlings from the semillero into the field once they are roughly six to eight inches tall and have a workable root system. Plants are set in rows by hand, watered in, and spaced according to whether the crop is destined for wrapper or filler.
Why it matters
Spacing set at transplanting decides leaf size and how much sun each plant gets, so it is one of the earliest decisions that shapes the finished cigar.
In context
"They transplanted after the first rains, then irrigated by furrow for the next two weeks."
