Jose 'Pepin' Garcia
Cuban master roller whose Miami workshop and later Esteli factory reshaped the American boutique cigar market in the 2000s.
Garcia learned to roll in Cuba as a child and worked in the Cuban industry before emigrating. In 2003 he opened El Rey de los Habanos in Miami with his son Jaime and daughter Janny, a small workshop that quickly became the production base for a set of new brands aimed at experienced smokers, Pete Johnson's Tatuaje foremost among them.
His technical signature is a Cuban rolling method: a densely packed bunch, an entubado-style filler arrangement and a triple cap, producing cigars with a firm draw and a distinctive burn. Combined with Nicaraguan corojo and criollo leaf, it created a house style that was widely imitated and that established Esteli as a source of full-flavoured boutique blends rather than only volume production.
The family opened My Father Cigars S.A. in Esteli in 2009 and now grows much of its own tobacco. Garcia remains involved in blending, with day-to-day direction shared between Jaime and Janny Garcia. His birth year is not consistently reported and is omitted here. His arrival in Miami and then Esteli is one of the clearest cases of Cuban technique transferring directly into the non-Cuban industry rather than being imitated at a distance.
